The human mind tends to focus on painful memories while letting positive ones fade. These distressing memories become our heaviest burden, causing ongoing emotional pain.
I know the benefits of movement very well. An hour on my recumbent bike and my mood improves. As for painful memories, I think it's natures way of warning us not to repeat, or be near, that which is dangerous. If we forget the rattlesnake bite, we're like not to heed the rattle. However, we don't seem to want to repeat the good either, so I don't know what the answer is, except to live until you die.... move it or lose it. :)
Past lives and the karma we carry forward play a huge role too I believe.
Yes, this is true of individuals as well as countries... if historical abuses could be obliterated from consciousness we would be able to live and love in the present better and not hold a grudge... who knows maybe Israel and Palestine could get along.
