Finding balance in our race of constantly chasing after the elusive "next thing.”
Social media has become our go-to solution to combat boredom, or as a means of procrastination when we want to distract ourselves from tasks we perceive as daunting.
In today's bustling and ever-connected world, we often find ourselves feeling rushed and under pressure. The clock ticks relentlessly as we race against time, striving to meet deadlines, attend back-to-back meetings, complete projects, or fulfill our myriad obligations. It feels as though we're perpetually in a race, constantly chasing after the elusive "next thing."
But why is this the prevalent sentiment? The answer lies in the simple fact that we all share the same 24 hours in a day. Within these finite hours, we need to fit in essential activities like sleep and meals, as well as work and leisure. However, in recent years, we have started spending an increasing amount of time on social media platforms, and this takes away precious hours from other important pursuits.
Social media has become our go-to solution to combat boredom, or as a means of procrastination when we want to distract ourselves from tasks we perceive as daunting. This diversion, albeit temporary and seemingly harmless, takes up a significant amount of time. This, in turn, makes us feel rushed when we eventually turn our attention to the important tasks we initially set aside.
This is why it's crucial to implement a limit on our social media usage. By doing so, we can reclaim those lost hours and redirect them towards focusing on what genuinely matters to us.
In an effort to regain control over my time, I recently made the conscious decision to reduce my internet package. This self-imposed limitation has nearly forced me to spend less time online and more on the things that truly matter. The result has been a noticeable improvement in my mental health levels and has also freed up time for me to engage in my purposeful activities, like dancing and writing.
I want to give you a break from reading and show you this video that I made with the Guelph Symphony Orchestra. Some live music and dancing are much needed to find our joy again:
Living in the vast, untouched wilderness of the Yukon taught me the invaluable lesson of disconnecting from the online world. Sometimes, the key to accomplishing our tasks and reconnecting with our inner selves lies in our ability to detach from the constant bombardment of digital distractions.

Absolutely Gurdeep, technology has created a need that most people have embraced as the norm and forsaken self reflection. I think that people in general when accessing social media feel a sense of accomplishment, where instant gratification sometimes can be found. This feeling of accomplishment tends to fool us and keep us connected for longer periods of time that distract us from reality. Our need for acceptance has been built into the technological algorithms which drive the social media platforms essentially creating a hypnotic draw, while spending precious time on it.
While there are positive aspects for the use of social media platforms, most just preoccupy us allowing us to escape from the daily grind of our day to day responsibilities.
I am literally scrolling as I read your words about too much scrolling. "By doing so, we can reclaim those lost hours and redirect them towards focusing on what genuinely matters to us." No matter what our age, distraction gets in the way of being our true selves. You are right Gurdeep; balance is key, in dance and in everything.
