In times when I find myself confronted with feelings of boredom, I make a conscious choice to let it happen. Instead of seeking immediate distractions, I allow my mind to experience this emotion.
Our need to feel like we’ve accomplished something worthwhile with our time pushes us to quick fixes like electronic devices in that these things engage us through interactive play. Although this interactivity is a false sense of accomplishment masked by the time we spend doing it.
Many of us don’t necessarily want to be alone with our thoughts especially if we have deep feelings of regret , abandonment or unfulfillment. These devices distract us from facing our thoughts and reconciling them in a positive way.
Physical activity produces positive feelings in our bodies enabling us to think creatively which clears our minds giving us the power to think about ourselves and others positively.
Mr.P. is excellent at encouraging me to choose a way out of boredom that is physical. He points out that the first step (metaphorically?) is to acknowledge that there IS boredom. "As long as I can resist the temptation of technology and allow myself to be submerged in boredom..." Thing is, I'm rarely bored, as I love reading and writing. I'll start by wriggling my toes while I type:)
Beautifully worded and a great message indeed! I’ve also realized lately that I was dwelling a lot on podcasts one after other… I replaced that urge by going for long walks and doing sewa in the Gurudwara. I’ve come across various interesting things on the way. I’ve recently chucked my AirPods, now my ears are also happy. During the walk, I just walk and observe everything around me. It feels very different to connect with the city more closely. And during Sewa, I’ve realized that I feel at peace and my thoughts are in that moment not in the past and future. More importantly, at that time I am not worried about anything.
Great article. I have been trying to go to my phone less. I love going for a walk or hike and then just sit and listen to my surroundings, it really does help to clear my head and think of new things or even to pray.
Funny I should read this now as I just finished a TV programme and have 30 mins to bed time. Instead of turning to social media I am just going to spend time thinking. I used to do more of that once.
Funny as I was just experiencing for the 1st time in a long time. I did 2 things that again, have not done in a long time: started a puzzle and reading a book. I decided to embrace it, instead of fighting it with TV or cell!
You are absolutely correct Gurdeep.
