The Importance of Deep Focus for Achieving Joy, Fulfillment and Productivity
Deep focusing is akin to meditation, where you gather your thoughts into one coherent place and then lay them out on paper like a prism refracting light.
In our modern world, where distractions are rampant and attention is constantly pulled in various directions by communications, social media and other pressures, the importance of deep focus is very valuable. It's vital to disconnect from the world around you and focus, a practice essential to your mental well-being as food is to your physical health.
When you let your thoughts gather in one place, they may scatter in different directions like toddlers playing in a park. That is the time to be still, find a sense of grounding, uplift your spirit, and embrace a feeling of joy. Focusing is akin to meditation, where you gather your thoughts into one coherent place and then lay them out on paper like a prism refracting light. The power of focus is comparable to the concentrated beam of sunshine through a prism that has the potential to burn up paper. So, consider practicing focusing.
The benefits of deep focus are numerous and far-reaching. For instance, if you have schoolwork or a significant project to complete, focusing intensely on your work can help you complete it more effectively. Deep focus allows you to understand, comprehend, and appreciate the task at hand in a much more profound way. The joy of completing your work, whether it's writing an insightful article, composing a beautiful piece of music, or painting a stunning portrait, is immense. Hence, the practice of focus becomes paramount.
Cultivating a state of deep focus is not an easy task, but there are certain strategies that can facilitate this process. First and foremost, it's pertinent to limit distractions such as social media. Consider turning off your phone and digital watch. If you have to work on a computer and the work is offline, make the effort to disconnect from the internet. If your work necessitates being online, set up security measures to block other distracting sites during your working hours.
In addition, create a conducive workspace. Clean your space, arrange it in a way that inspires you, make it look like a sacred temple of productivity. Before you commence your deep focus session, take a moment to breathe deeply, to collect your thoughts. If you're able to do this in nature, that's even better. If not, perhaps you can open a window, let in some fresh air. Afterwards, create a sense of joy in your heart. Think something positive, something good.
As you start working, focus solely on one task. This single-minded focus is a form of meditation. The main objective of meditation is to manage focus and concentrate on one thing exclusively. If you feel an urge to check your phone or peek at your watch, resist it. Put your devices in a different room, in a box. The closer they are, the more likely you are to succumb to the temptation of using them. It's crucial to remember that your devices should not be present in your workspace. If your work doesn't involve using a computer, put your computer in a separate room too. Time your deep focus session. Set an alarm with a loud ringer so that you don't feel the need to constantly check the time.
During your deep focus session, relish in the peace and tranquility of your surroundings. If your mind starts to wander, don't worry. The mind is a complex entity that's hard to manage. Just be aware when it wanders, smile and gently steer it back to the task at hand. Engage your mind in the activity so that it doesn't have the opportunity to wander off.
Should your mind continue to wander, don't get upset. Just be conscious of when it wanders and gently guide it back to focus. Engross your mind in an activity so that it doesn't have the chance to drift away.
Find joy in the work that you're doing. Strengthen your willpower to not quit before one hour, unless there's an emergency. Throughout the entire hour, make sure that you're breathing deeply, smiling, finding joy, and thinking positive thoughts.
When the hour is up, take a moment to appreciate yourself. Thank yourself for allowing you to sit down or stand, undisturbed, and focus. You'll soon start to notice the immense power of that one hour of deep work every day. If you can extend this to two, three, even four hours of deep focus every single day, that's commendable. But treating one hour every single day as absolutely essential will make a considerable difference.

I call my meditation style Creative Staring. Your words match: "The main objective of meditation is to manage focus and concentrate on one thing exclusively." I try to use my meditation before I begin writing. If I am successful my words flow better. Thank you for being an advocate for a singular approach to carrying out a job; 'Multi-tasking' is not an admirable pursuit, despite what our consumer culture says!
Great insight! Thank you, Gurdeep!
