Positivity Isn't Magic, but It Feels Magical
My advocacy for positivity isn't about denying the reality of difficult circumstances. Rather, it's about developing a balanced approach to emotional health, where sadness is also acknowledged.

Positivity isn't a panacea or a magical solution that instantly dissolves life's challenges. Instead, it serves as a transformative tool that fundamentally reshapes our relationship with bad times and personal growth. When we embrace positivity, we're not simply putting on a happy face - we're actively rewiring our neural pathways to recognize opportunities where others might see only obstacles. By maintaining a positive attitude and cultivating an open heart, we create space for innovative solutions and unexpected breakthroughs to emerge. This shift in mindset doesn't just change how we see our problems; it fundamentally alters how we interact with them, leading us to discover pathways forward that remain hidden when we're trapped in negative thought patterns.
Over time, this positive approach becomes more than just a coping mechanism. It evolves into a sophisticated emotional intelligence that helps us navigate life's complexities with greater grace and resilience. While positivity may not eliminate our problems outright, it provides us with an extensive toolkit of mental and emotional resources that prove invaluable when confronting life's challenges. This emotional fortitude becomes particularly crucial when we find ourselves surrounded by difficulties from all directions, acting as a stabilizing force that keeps us grounded and focused.
Hope, in this expansive context, transforms into something far more substantial than mere wishful thinking. It becomes an unwavering companion on our journey, a persistent force that continuously reminds us of the infinite possibilities that lie ahead, even when our immediate path seems shrouded in uncertainty. It's that quiet yet powerful voice that whispers KEEP GOING when every external circumstance suggests surrender. This internal dialogue becomes our anchor during turbulent times, providing the strength to persevere when external support may be lacking.
Then joy emerges as the vital spark that not only keeps our inner child alive but nurtures its growth and evolution. It serves as an inexhaustible source of wonder and excitement, possessing the remarkable ability to transform even the most ordinary moments into extraordinary opportunities for personal growth and happiness. Joy reminds us to find beauty in life's simple pleasures, to embrace laughter as a daily practice, and to approach each day with a sense of adventure and enthusiasm that can transform routine experiences into meaningful memories.
By consciously cultivating and nurturing these three essential elements – joy, hope, and positivity – we construct more than just a temporary emotional shelter. We build a robust and enduring emotional foundation, one that's capable of withstanding life's fiercest storms while simultaneously helping us emerge from these challenges not merely intact, but profoundly transformed. This foundation becomes the bedrock upon which we can build a more resilient, fulfilled, and authentically positive life experience.
I would like to share a personal journey from my own life, specifically the challenging period from 2007 to 2012. During these five difficult years, I experienced firsthand the debilitating effects of persistent negativity. Despite having valid reasons for my negative outlook at that time, I found myself caught in a downward spiral where negativity became not just a temporary state, but an overwhelming daily reality. Through this experience, I witnessed how negativity can create a distorted lens through which we view the world, gradually diminishing our inner strength and paralyzing our ability to take meaningful action toward positive change.
The contrast between my new circumstances now and my past is stark and poignant. Those dark years from 2007 to 2012 were characterized by debilitating mental health crises, deep-seated depression, loss of home, and even suicidal thoughts. Each day was a struggle, marked by tears and an overwhelming sense of hopelessness. Whatever kind of work I started during those years, it crumbled into pieces. It felt as though I was trapped in a relentless cycle of loss, with each setback compounding the pain of the last.
It wasn't until 2012 that I experienced a paradigm shift in my understanding of positivity's transformative power. This revelation fundamentally altered my life's trajectory, leading me to conceptualize this transformation through a powerful metaphor: Consider water flowing across an open landscape without banks to guide it. This unrestricted flow often results in destructive flooding, causing widespread chaos and devastation. However, when this same water flows between well-defined riverbanks, it becomes a source of life and beauty, nurturing vegetation along its path, providing sustenance for wildlife, creating recreational opportunities for people, and serving countless beneficial purposes across vast stretches of land. These riverbanks represent the essential role of positivity in our lives, providing structure and direction to our emotional flow.
Fast forward to 2016, a mere four–five years later, and I found myself in a position I could never have dreamed of: appearing on Canada's national networks, sharing my story of transformation with millions of viewers. The sheer improbability of this turnaround left me in a state of constant amazement. Through these seemingly miraculous events, I came to a profound realization: joy, hope, and positivity are far more than just short-lived emotional states. They are, in fact, indispensable tools for survival, especially in the face of life's most daunting challenges. These powerful emotions have the capacity to guide us through our darkest hours, providing the strength needed to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles. They imbue us with a resilience that allows us to face life's myriad challenges head-on, transforming our perspective and empowering us to not just survive, but truly thrive, even in the most adverse circumstances.
While acknowledging the importance of positivity, it's crucial to address the concept of toxic positivity. This misunderstanding of true positivity involves suppressing or dismissing other authentic emotional experiences. Instead, we must recognize and honour the full spectrum of human emotions. Sadness, in particular, holds its own precious value - it deepens our understanding of the human experience, enhances our capacity for empathy, and creates meaningful connections with others who have experienced similar feelings. These challenging emotional experiences, when processed healthily, ultimately enrich our life's emotional landscape.
My advocacy for positivity isn't about maintaining an artificial smile or denying the reality of difficult emotions. Rather, it's about developing a balanced approach to emotional well-being. When experiencing sadness or pain, it's perfectly acceptable, even necessary, to acknowledge and process these feelings for a time. However, maintaining awareness that joy, hope, and positivity will eventually guide us through these challenging emotional phases is crucial. Think of positivity as the paddles of our life's boat – without them, we might find yourself adrift in emotional currents, but with them, we gain the ability to navigate purposefully through life's various waters, maintaining direction and momentum even in challenging times.
Let me explain it with an example. Picture yourself caught in heavy traffic, waiting at a red light that seems to be taking longer than usual. The seconds tick by slowly as you sit there, surrounded by other vehicles and the constant hum of city life. In this moment, your mindset becomes the determining factor in how you experience this situation.
When viewed through a lens of negativity, this ordinary delay can trigger an intense cascade of negative emotions. Your body responds physiologically - your heart rate accelerates, your muscles tense, and your blood pressure rises. The scene before you transforms into what feels like absolute chaos. You might begin to interpret this minor delay as a personal affront, viewing it as yet another obstacle in your day, perhaps even perceiving it as a challenge to your sense of control and personal identity.
When, however, you approach the same situation with positivity, an extraordinary transformation occurs. The identical scene becomes an opportunity for mindfulness and appreciation. Through this positive perspective, you begin to notice the intricate dance of urban life around you - the diverse tapestry of people in neighboring vehicles, each with their own stories and destinations. You find yourself appreciating the sophisticated traffic system that helps maintain order in our busy cities. These moments of waiting become a gift - an opportunity to take deep, calming breaths, to practice mindfulness, or simply to pause and smile.
In this positive state, your physiological response is entirely different. Your heartbeat maintains a steady, peaceful rhythm. Your muscles relax, and a sense of tranquility washes over you. Rather than feeling threatened or frustrated, you experience a profound sense of connection with your surroundings. This peaceful state doesn't just affect your current moment - it creates a positive ripple effect that influences whatever situation you encounter next. Your elevated mood becomes a lens through which you view subsequent experiences, transforming ordinary moments into opportunities for joy and appreciation.
This is the true magic of positivity - its ability to fundamentally transform not just how we perceive our circumstances, but how we physically and emotionally experience them, creating a stream of beneficial effects that extend far beyond the initial moment.
Positivity and joy are deeply connected, like parallel tracks on a railway line. To infuse more joy into your life, I want to share a special video with you. In the Yukon wilderness near Fish Lake, my friend Danella Olsen and I danced together in -20°C frigid cold weather, creating warmth and joy through uplifting music and movement, sharing our celebration with the universe. Enjoy:
Positivity serves as a powerful catalyst for fostering togetherness, unity, joy, and world peace, particularly in our contemporary world where negativity seems increasingly prevalent through political polarization and religious divisions. This transformative mindset empowers individuals to discover and appreciate the inherent joy in every person they encounter, regardless of superficial differences in appearance or cultural background. Those who embrace positivity demonstrate a profound commitment to treating all people with genuine humanity, cultivating an inclusive mindset that welcomes and celebrates diversity in all its forms.
Rather than succumbing to the easy path of criticism and judgment, positive people actively seek out and nurture the goodness in others. They dedicate themselves to empowering and uplifting those around them, finding deep personal fulfillment in the act of supporting others' growth and well-being. This approach to human interaction creates a beautiful cycle of mutual enrichment, where the act of helping others and recognizing their inherent worth becomes a source of genuine happiness and satisfaction.
This represents the true essence and power of positivity: while those trapped in negative mindsets may continue to view others through distorted lenses, positive individuals maintain an open heart and an expansive perspective. They envision and actively contribute to creating a world that functions as one interconnected global family, where each member's unique characteristics and diverse backgrounds are not merely tolerated but celebrated as essential components of our collective human tapestry. In this vision, differences are understood as sources of strength and beauty, contributing to the rich mosaic of human experience and potential.
Positivity, then, feels magical.

Agreed about toxic positivity. One thing I’ve thought about gratitude is that it has to be recognized from within, not pushed from without. “You should be grateful for . . .” feels invalidating, erasing—although I get it if people don’t want to deal with others’ problems and so use that phrase as a shield. I think what’s healthy is looking at things that we already recognize as good to/for us—just acknowledging what’s already there.
Reality & Mystery can co-exist. Your advice to fully embrace both elements of life while not mixing them into a mumbo jumbo of thought is wise. Your Joy, Hope, and Positivity is often my go-to place of Curiosity. There is no judgement here, just Wonder.
