Sadness May Stay Around, but Seek Joy Every Day

The pursuit of joy is not a one-time achievement, but a daily practice and commitment.

Find joy every single day. In our modern world, where challenges and negativity seem to surround us at every turn, discovering and embracing joy can be a formidable task. Why is this so? The answer lies in the myriad of factors that can easily cast shadows over our lives, including but not limited to financial hardships, health concerns, relationship struggles, imbalanced friendships, political turmoil, global conflicts, and international crises. This extensive list of potential sources of distress seems to grow endlessly, making it all too easy to become overwhelmed by sadness and get entangled in the web of these complex issues.

As human beings, we are inherently sensitive creatures. Our emotions are intricately connected to the world around us, and we often find ourselves profoundly affected by the events and circumstances that unfold in our immediate surroundings and beyond. In the midst of this thick, oppressive cloud of sadness that can sometimes envelop us, locating even a glimmer of joy or happiness can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. I can personally attest to the truth of these situations and emotions, having weathered numerous storms and navigated through countless dark clouds throughout my own life journey.

There was a particularly challenging period in my life when it seemed as though obstacles and hardships were waiting for me at every turn. Financial instability loomed large, health issues plagued my days, and a pervasive sense of gloom hung over everything like a heavy fog. During this time, the very notion of finding joy felt like an insurmountable task, one that required more energy and optimism than I possessed. Sadness became my constant companion, and I found myself engulfed by a profound sense of loneliness, devoid of hope and feeling as though my life had been stripped of all meaning and purpose. It was in this moment of utter despair, when I felt I had nothing left to lose, that I turned to two fundamental sources of solace: my inner joy and physical movement. These two seemingly simple concepts would go on to become the catalysts for a remarkable transformation in my life, forever altering my perspective and approach to finding happiness.

When you find yourself in the eye of the storm, surrounded by these metaphorical clouds of despair, life can feel incredibly daunting and overwhelming. It is during these moments, when we are gripped by sadness from all sides, that the very thought of joy and positivity can seem not only elusive but almost impossible to entertain. However, it's crucial to recognize that sometimes, sadness enters our lives not as a permanent state, but as a teacher. It comes bearing important lessons, helping us to find balance in our emotions and experiences, and fostering a deeper connection with others who may be experiencing similar struggles. This shared experience of sadness can serve as a bridge, allowing us to develop greater empathy and understanding for the human condition.

In light of this perspective, we can begin to see that sadness isn't inherently negative or detrimental to our well-being. On the contrary, it plays a vital role in our personal growth and development. Sadness has the power to strip away our ego, revealing our raw humanity and vulnerability. It often serves as a powerful motivator, pushing us to take bold steps and make decisions we might otherwise shy away from. In some cases, finding your own unique path to joy may require you to temporarily remove yourself from familiar surroundings or situations. You might need to embrace solitude, learning to find contentment in your own company rather than pushing loneliness away. The journey to rediscovering joy often demands that we think outside the box, making unconventional choices that lead us back to our authentic selves and the happiness that resides within.

Throughout my own journey towards reclaiming joy, I discovered several key strategies that proved instrumental in my transformation. Chief among these was learning to trust both the people around me and my environment. When we experience hurt or betrayal, it's a natural instinct to close off our hearts, erecting emotional barriers that can be incredibly difficult to dismantle. However, to truly find and embrace joy, we must summon the courage to open our hearts once again. This process of reopening requires vulnerability and faith, but it is essential for allowing joy to enter our lives. Once you've taken that brave step to open your heart, the next crucial phase is to move forward. This doesn't mean forgetting the past or dismissing the lessons it has taught you, but rather forgiving and releasing the hold it has on your present and future. By finding peace in your heart and letting go of past hurts, you create space for new joy to flourish.

To instil more joy in your day, I'm sharing a delightful video featuring the stunning autumn colours I captured near Stratford, Ontario, two years ago during my cross-country tour:

The pursuit of joy is not a one-time achievement, but a daily practice and commitment. Make it your mission to actively seek out and cultivate joy in your life every single day. Remember that even in the darkest of times, there are always small moments of beauty, kindness, and wonder waiting to be discovered. By consciously choosing to focus on these positive aspects, no matter how small they may seem, you can gradually shift your perspective and invite more joy into your daily existence. Embrace the journey of finding joy, knowing that each step you take towards happiness, no matter how small, is a victory worth celebrating.
