Why Your Sensitivity Isn't a Weakness
In the moments when I felt an increased level of sensitivity, I found solace and strength in my dance movements. The rhythmic flow and the physical exertion of dancing became a supportive crutch.
Many people are familiar with sensitivity, yet often find it hard to understand. Anyone can experience sensitivity in varying degrees and at different stages in their lives. Like many others, I have experienced periods of increased sensitivity and can relate to it on a personal level. Contrary to common belief, being sensitive is not a negative trait. Instead, it indicates that you have the ability to think deeply about situations and feel them profoundly in your heart. Sensitivity, contrary to what one might initially think, is not as detrimental as it may seem.
When you find yourself being particularly sensitive or emotionally responsive to any given situation, it is essential to always remember the fundamental nature of life. Life is inherently composed of peaks and valleys, a series of ups and downs. This means that just as the moments of joy, success, and prosperity - the 'ups' - are transient and don't last forever, the same can be said for the 'downs', the periods of difficulty, sadness, and failure. Both these phases are temporary and cyclical. So, if you're going through a rough patch, remember that it won't last forever. Just as the ups didn’t stay, so too the downs are not going to stay. They are but phases in the grand scheme of life and it is through this lens that we should view our personal situations, always with the understanding that change is the only constant.
There was a time when I underwent a significant transitions in my life - moving from one country to another is one of them. This geographical shift to the Yukon in Canada’s North, which involved living far away from my beloved family and friends in Punjab, made me feel isolated in this vast world. I found myself yearning for the familiar faces of my loved ones, and my ancestral land. The challenges of assimilating into a new culture only amplified my sensitivity. This accumulation of experiences led to a notable increase in my sensitivity. However, I discovered happiness and relief in shedding these sensitivities at each stage of my life, like caribous shed their antlers each summer. Whenever I found myself overwhelmed with sensitivity, I would allow myself the freedom to cry if necessary, and I would embrace the emotions that were fuelling my sensitivity to have a conversation with them.
In the moments when I felt an increased level of sensitivity, I found solace and strength in my dance movements. The rhythmic flow and the physical exertion of dancing became a supportive crutch, helping me navigate the rough waters of my emotions. With each move and gesture, I was able to reconnect with my inner joy and self-confidence, which, at times, seemed like distant memories. I discovered that physical movement served as a powerful tool for self-discovery and self-realization, capable of reigniting the spark of happiness and self-assuredness within me.
Choosing to inhabit a remote cabin in the Yukon was a decision that allowed me a deeper understanding and appreciation of nature, in all its raw and unfettered glory. The experience of residing in such isolated locations heightened my senses, making me more receptive and sensitive to my surroundings. This newfound sensitivity manifested most prominently when I found myself in moments of solitude. Alone with my thoughts, I would keenly observe the world around me, absorbing the subtle nuances of the wilderness that had become my home.
The same land that offered me solitude and sensitivity also presented me with a vast, open stage, a place where I could express myself freely. It provided me with a space to engage in one of my greatest sources of joy - dance. I would dance around my cabin, lost in the rhythmic motions, using the act as a form of catharsis, a way to release pent-up emotions and regain my joy. The wilderness around my cabin, the frozen lakes that shimmered in the winter sun, the towering mountains that painted the sky - they all became my dance floor.
Through these moments of dance, I discovered strength. Strength to endure, strength to persevere, strength to find my joy, and strength to cherish my sensitivity, rather than view it as a weakness. Living in the Yukon in a remote cabin, dancing in the wild, and finding strength in my sensitivity - these experiences have shaped me, changing my perspective and influencing my approach to life.
With this personal experience, I would like to suggest that finding a hobby that involves physical activity could potentially serve as a supportive companion during periods of heightened sensitivity. It doesn't have to be something complex or demanding. You can start with something as simple and accessible as walking, which can be easily incorporated into your daily routine.
However, the key is to choose an activity that you truly love. If you're someone who finds joy in the rush of adrenaline while biking, then go for it. If you're a nature lover who enjoys the serenity of hiking, then embrace the trails. If the thought of swimming makes you feel at peace, then dive into the water. And if dancing stirs your soul, like it does mine, then lose yourself in the music.
Incorporating physical movement into your life is an effective way to nurture a growth mindset. It encourages resilience, adaptability, and a positive outlook, all of which are invaluable during periods of heightened sensitivity. So, find your rhythm, pursue what moves you, and remember that the journey to self-growth and self-discovery is an ongoing dance.
It is essential to comprehend that the qualities of sensitivity and vulnerability should not be misconstrued as indications of weakness. In fact, they function as a source of profound strength and resilience, acting as a springboard that allows us to bounce back from adversity. These traits, when embraced, can serve as an asset, enabling us to better navigate our emotions and experiences. It is vital to not only accept your sensitivity and vulnerability but to wear them as a badge of honour, openly discussing your struggles without fear of judgment. It's crucial to remember that reaching out for support in times of need is not a sign of defeat, but rather a testament to your bravery.
One of the salient lessons that life has imparted upon me is the importance of reframing perspectives, especially during periods of hardship. This involves a conscious shift in one's mindset, transforming negative thought patterns into positive ones. It's about finding alternative, more empowering interpretations of the challenges that life throws our way. By shifting our perspective, we can turn obstacles into opportunities, love, peace and joy.
I truly admire and appreciate your sensitivity, a quality that allows you to understand and connect with others on a deeper level. Additionally, your vulnerability, a characteristic that many may shy away from, is actually a strength. It shows your courage to open yourself up, to experience emotions in their purest form, and to allow others to see you in your most authentic state. Never underestimate the power these qualities bestow upon you!
As a sensitive person, I extend my love to all other sensitive people everywhere in the world.
