Terrific article! My whole adulthood, I been waiting for my life to begin. Next month, I’ll be turning 58 years old. I keep telling myself, right after “this” or “that”, then I’ll be able to have some fun. It often feels like I’m so close to finishing “this” or “that” but before I can relax, something or another happens that takes my attention away from enjoying myself. Maybe if I start reading my books regularly, instead of once per year. Thanks, Gurdeep! I love the dancing & music in your video!

So true. When I am fully present in the moment (not thinking about past or future) I am able to feel the joy of seeing the true beauty in a violet or sun rise. In those moments I truly feel a part of this incredible universe. I really appreciate you sharing your experiences Gurdeep and reminding me to stop, breathe and be in the moment.

I think it’s important to acknowledge that what we think is going to happen in our lives is just a fantastic fantasy that we create for ourselves to feel that we have some control over our future when in fact our future cannot be controlled in its entirety. Yes, we can direct our decisions and our choices to accomplish certain endeavours that we may undertake such as our education, choice of career or whether we get up each morning to greet our challenges as they present themselves good or bad.

When we don’t see our “now” we miss the opportunity that it presents, blinds us to the happiness that we have in the moment. When we concentrate on the future we become unaware of ourselves and our needs, living in the future or the past robs us of our present. We can’t travel back in time and we cannot time travel into the future therefore the only reality is the present moment that we must relish in that our future is to be discovered not controlled. Our happiness cannot be dependent on our wants rather our happiness must originate from ourselves and the moments of awareness that we experience in a state of awakening.

Well said, Nick! Thank you for your thoughtful contribution. I especially appreciated your insight that "We can't travel back in time and we cannot time travel into the future." Thank you very much.

SO glad I found you on Substack, Gurdeep. (Used to follow you on the bird app, back in the day). You look so cozy in the snow! I appreciate your insights so much.

I find little moments in my day to look out the window at nature (birds, squirrels, trees bare, people walking their dogs). Even just 30-60 seconds of this relaxes my nervous system. It's a moment to appreciate the here and now. Keep smiling and dancing!

As a full time caregiver for my disabled loved one, I often find myself struggling to find a sliver of joy in the world. But then, at night, as I snuggle in my bed with a good book and watch the silvery shadows on the wall from the moonlight, I realize there is joy in even the hardest times. Thank you for awakening me to these joys!
