Great post! Thanks for sharing with us. I love the authentic joy and happiness your spread. I aspire to be more like you, and to think less of what people think of me.
When I first started reading your posts, I asked what is joy, and how to find it. Slowly and with your insights I have begun to realize it’s inside me, my approach to life, its problems and its goodness. I am slowly weaning off social media, or perhaps I should say, curating my feed. Honestly there are a lot of poisonous people out there, and while we can’t avoid them all, learning more about ourselves is a start to not letting their poison infect us. Does that make any sense? Thanks again.
Gurdeep. Please keep writing your truth. You write for many of us I think who beat to a deep quiet drum not captured in the loud expectations of attention seekers and followers of emptiness. You are acknowledging we exist by connecting and encouraging us. Thank you.
Gurdeep you are so right in your analogy. We are so driven by seeking approval from others because it makes us feel less alone knowing that others have had the same experiences and lived a similar life to ours. I think our quest for others approval and validation stems from our inner child still seeking our parents approval and validation, so as adults we project this onto others in our life wanting to feel this satisfaction that even if we were to receive it, would not be enough to quench our thirst for it. I think that our journey in life is to eventually find that all that we need to feel happy can be found in ourselves and looking for this satisfaction in others and things is a losing battle that will leave us unfulfilled and empty. Ultimately looking for joy outside of ourselves is a temporary fix akin to a drug addict yearning for the next fix, we only set ourselves up for the next disappointment. I believe that the things that are truly meant to be for us will find us without our incessant need to pursue things that are not meant to be.
Thank you for not hiding your timely and needed ruminations behind a paywall. Your joyous dancing is beyond me now, but I can still imagine how it would feel in my younger body, and mentally get up and dance with you each time I see it. Your thoughts on being your authentic self—perfect timing, and beautifully expressed. Thank you, thank you.
Another great and meaningful article. I know this one will help a whole lot of people. I think people are feeling this even more now that we have social media, especially young people. I really appreciate your perspective on this.
Beautiful reminder of what is truly important! Seems I had to learn late in life that my approval counts and even later that it counts most. Comfort, for me, has come in the form of finding I fit myself perfectly
My lived experience has me believing that the purpose of life/lives (I believe in reincarnation) is to be eventually self realized and realize that you are a part of the omnipresent God and not apart from God.
People are at different places on the path and some will even be cynical of my remarks here...
There was a time when people were aggressive towards those who espoused the "new" concept that the world is round and you won't fall off it.
The sun shines its light and shares its energy with all... we are intended to express God/Love/ Reverence towards God within all unconditionally.
There is only one reason to do anything... because it is God's will.
Oh my goodness, this is so valuable. Thank you. I asked early this morning for help and guidance to understand what I'm going through AGAIN, to learn what I need to learn, finally. And then, I read this article. Thank you. You work in mysterious ways!!
I have swung both ways and I think I’m finding the middle to be the best spot. You can be so busy fighting to be your authentic self that you alienate all around you leaving yourself authentically lonely. The converse is also true, you can be so dependent on others that you stifle all the things you value most. I have found that true liberation comes from within, because in the end no one will ever know me as well as I know myself and then placing trust in those around me that their love is strong enough to handle me not always conforming to their expectations. We must be careful that we are not excusing being fickle for working on our authenticity.
The beauty of growing older is the confidence of years. One grows more knowledgeable about rectory self and so much less worried about those that don’t like how you turned out.
